Ziploc Omelets

Yes, you read me correctly.  Omelets in a Ziploc!  I've heard of this done before and doubted the validity of how well it works.  So I put it to the test with my 9th graders this week.  They've been studying fats so they get to make 2 egg omelet loaded with fatty goodness!  I am personally not a fan of eggs in any sort, form or way, unless you can get my Grandma to make her scrambled eggs.  THEN, I'll eat them. Other than that, I run far and fast away from ingesting them.

Anyway, here's what you do.  You'll need the typical ingredients for an omelet like eggs, cheese, ham/bacon, tomatoes, olives, avocados, etc.  Whatever you want to put in your omelet. You will also need to use the freezer safe, double zip Ziplocs.

Now follow me:
Step 1:  Place your stock pot on your stove top on high.  Fill approximately half way full.
Step 2:  Crack two eggs into a cereal bowl.  Make sure there are NO shell pieces in your bowl, otherwise they will tear the Ziploc.  Don't scramble them or mix them at all.
Step 3:  Pour the eggs into the Ziploc.  Add cheese, bacon, other ingredients.
Step 4:  Zip your bag closed.  Gently squeeze the back, mixing together all your omelet mixings.  Don't be scared.  It helps if you get most of the air out of the bag prior to squishing, but I found that a little bit helps.
Step 5:  Holding your bag upright, open and release ALL air.  Carefully reseal the bag with as little of air as possible.  If you leave air in the bag, then it expands during cooking and your bag will explode. :)  It will also float more instead of cook.
Step 6:  Place your bag into the boiling pot of water.  Allow it to cook for about 10 minutes or until the liquid is now solid.  While they are cooking, you can use tongs to move them around or keep them from touching the sides of the pot for too long.
Step 7:  Remove from boiling water and place on towel on your counter.  Carefully open the seal and dump onto a plate.  Eat and enjoy!

FYI:  If you are making numerous omelets, write the name on the Ziploc to keep them separate.
My 9th graders had a great time with this.  No one got burned or boiled.  It would be fun to do with your kids since they can choose their ingredients and mix up their bags.
